Audio-Technica ATH-M40x Headphone Review 2022

Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x Headphone Review 2022

Audio-Technica produces excellent headphones. All of the ATH models provide studio-quality sound. The ATH-M40x, meanwhile, sits in the middle of the pack and provides excellent value for money. These aren’t for you if you’re seeking to make a fashion statement. They have a lot to offer if you’re seeking for high-quality headphones and are willing to sacrifice some usefulness.

So, let’s have a look at it more closely…

Audio-Technica ATH-M40x Headphone Performance

Audio-Technica ATH-M40x Headphone Performance

The sound quality of any pair of Audio Technica headphones is one area where we expect them to shine. Thankfully, the ATH-M40x headphones will not disappoint you in this regard. These headphones have a great sound.

The ATH-M40x headphones, like the rest of the ATH line, have received rave reviews from critics and music fans alike. They consistently receive rave reviews in papers and forums. These are typically praised as excellent alternatives to the more modern, bass-heavy options that are so prevalent in today’s market. We’d anticipate a well-balanced and flat response from studio headphones. And that’s essentially what you’ll receive. But it’s not quite there.

These studio monitor headphones aren’t fully neutral, despite the fact that they’re promoted as such. There is some coloration in the bass that isn’t supposed to be there. It’s not massive or overwhelming, yet it’s still noticeable. The bass is even more colourful than the ATH-M50x headphones on which they’re based. They have a snappy, vibrant tone to them that is a little more apparent than you may imagine. It’s not the same as the “kick you in the face” bass you’d receive from a set of Beats. It’s a little more subtle. The details in the mids and trebles aren’t buried.

Surprisingly, this extra coloration extends all the way down to the lower mids. Everything is maintained under control, though, to avoid saturation of the lower frequencies. This smart sound-shaping allows the mid- and trebles to come through with their richness and complexity. The clarity and detail are there to be heard when they would otherwise be lost.

These are a wonderful choice for discriminating listeners looking for an engaging and lively sound with plenty of detail. They’re a wonderful alternative to most modern headphones set up for listening to hip hop and other genres of bass-driven music for music fans who aren’t slaves to the bass. They’re still a wonderful alternative, but it’s worth noting that they don’t provide a perfectly neutral profile; if you’re looking for a truly flat response, the ATH-M40x headphones aren’t for you.

They’re fine if you don’t mind a slight amount of extra bass. We also think they’re close to ideal if you only want to get one pair of cheap headphones for multipurpose use. Furthermore, with the addition of the Bluetooth BAL-M40x adapter, they become an even more formidable combination.

Audio-Technica ATH-M40x Headphone Design

The design is very much in line with what Audio-Technica is known for. Their headphones and products aren’t flashy or flamboyant in any way. It’s all about the performance at Audio-Technica.

The colour scheme of the ATH-M40x headphones is all black. A silver logo is encircled by a circular pattern on the earcups. The name and logo are proudly emblazoned on the headband in silver. These are a pair of headphones that don’t attract attention. The aesthetic is understatedly beautiful while remaining minimal.

The Audio-Technica ATH-M40x headphones are fairly large for a pair of headphones used on a daily basis. They have a compact cup profile, but they don’t have the same slimline look as a pair of Beats or Skullcandy headphones.

They also lack the features you’d expect from a pair of headphones designed for urban use. Although you could almost get away with wearing these on the train to work without getting stared at, you probably wouldn’t. For storage or transportation, they can be folded into a smaller profile. However, because they just come with a protective case, you shouldn’t take them out of the house too often. These are studio headphones, after all. They belong in the studio, and they should probably stay in the studio.

Audio-Technica ATH-M40x Headphone Value

The Audio-Technica ATH-M40x is a terrific choice if you’re looking for a good pair of monitoring headphones without spending a lot of money. You get clear sound quality, a solid frame, and various cords for less than $100 USD. There are lots of headsets with a more realistic frequency response, but they’ll set you back a lot more.

For neutral listening, the Audio-Technica M40X delivers a consistent bass, mid, and treble sound. Because of their closed-back design, they don’t offer a large soundstage, but their well-balanced sound will satisfy most listeners.

Pros
  • Balanced sound profile
  • Good bass
  • Professional design features
  • Quality detachable cables
  • Good noise isolation
  • Great value for money
Cons
  • Not immediately comfortable for many users (can modify)
  • Cable connecting the ear cups is susceptible to breaking (is detachable)

Final Thoughts

These are a great pair of headphones that are both inexpensive and of good quality. They produce high-quality sound that is enjoyable to listen to in a variety of musical genres.

While they aren’t a full-featured studio monitor set and aren’t nearly as accurate as more expensive Audio-Technica headphones, the sound is still adequate for studio use.
